On Orchard Street we are faced with two new developments in construction at the same time: One, a 20+ story hotel on the west side of the street, going all the way through to Allen Street....

See that "big" building next to the the site? (above) That is the average height of the buildings on the Lower East Side - 6 stories. So - the hotel is going to be FOUR TIMES AS TALL!!! But that is not all....

On the east side of the street, they are tearing out what was once a row of family owned shops, all uniquely one story high, and in a space six buildings wide, and two buildings deep, they are building what is described as a FIFTEEN STORY CONDO-TYPE APARTMENT BUILDING.

On Orchard Street... the most famous historic boulevard on the Lower East Side, a neighborhood that is famous and beloved for its small streets, amazing history, and character that sets it apart from every other neighborhood.

How on earth will our small streets handle the intense vehicle and human traffic that will be created by these two massive structures?

How much will the skies be forever darkened on this sunny street by this ridiculous decision?

Why didn't anyone in our local government put up a red flag or bring this before the community?

Do the Tenement Museum, and the Lower East Side B.I.D. - both of whose organizations place considerable emphasis on the history of the Lower East Side - support this?

We will join together and get the answers! Stay tuned! Sign up at info@theloco.org!

We have joined forces with The Lower East Side Residents Coalition, and we support the work of The Committee for Zoning Inaction and the work they are doing on East 3rd street. L.O.C.O. seeks to be an umbrella organization for as many groups as possible on the Lower East Side, whose work and struggles are affected by issues of gentrification, in order to join all of those voices into one strong voice that cannot be ignored. We would welcome your group joining with us and participating!
